Montreal

Novels that have Montreal as a lead character include Gabrielle Roy’s The Tin Flute (Bonheur d'occasion), which captures urban life in the  St-Henri neighbourhood, and Mordecai Richler's The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and St. Urbain's Horsemen which depict English-Jewish life in the Mile End.

Many call Montreal native Irving Layton Canada's greatest poet.

In much of his work, author Michel Tremblay captures the alienation of poor working-class Franco-Montrealers circa 1960-1965, during Quebec's Quiet Revolution. The best-selling novel in Québécois literature, Yves Beauchemin's The Alley Cat (Le Matou), looks at the same population twenty years later.

Émile Ollivier, ( La Brûlerie), portrays French-speaking immigrants in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood; and you'll find plenty of schools and libraries not only in Montreal, but throughout the entire province of Quebec, named after the nineteenth-century poet Émile Nelligan.

Montreal spawned literary modernism in English-speaking Canada. The movement was led by poets such as A.M. Klein and F.R. Scott in the mid-1920's.

Each Spring Montreal hosts Blue Metropolis, one of the largest and best multilingual literary festivals in the world
